Elements of the ALP

You can’t create a leader in a classroom.  Management is not a science, nor a profession.  It is a practice – it has to be appreciated through experience, in context.

Seventeen years ago, world-renowned management thinker Henry Mintzberg, professor at McGill University (Canada) and author of Managers not MBAs, set out to change management education through a masters program called the International Masters Program in Practising Management (IMPM). Details of this program can be found at www.impm.org.

The success of the IMPM lead to the development of the Advanced Leadership Program (ALP).

The ALP is an executive program where leadership capabilities are developed while a major company initiative or challenge is worked on and brought to fruition.

  • The ALP takes place in Canada, India and England and as such provides a global forum for executives to learn from other international participants and faculty.
  • The ALP supports pre program preparation. Participants meet with their team and immediate supervisor to outline expectations and set objectives for the program.
  • The ALP draws on the expertise of participants in the classroom as they become “friendly consultants” bringing their knowledge and experience to bear on the initiatives others bring to the program.
  • The ALP ensure that the impact and value for the sending organization can be realized after the first module – designing for change or implementing solutions for the issues can begin when participants return to their jobs.
  • The ALP helps the participants transmit the learning back into the organization – through coaching and consulting.
